The morning passes by in a flash. I am surprised how quickly I settle in and am happy to discover that Mrs Fletcher is apparently quite similar to me in how she works. Everything is in good order and easy to find, and there appears to be a checklist for everything. I actually feel as if I am in love with her by morning break.

I hear the children stampeding towards the playground, and then as the door opens, my heart lurches as I see Daniel leaning against the doorframe looking sexily at me.

‘Well Mrs Bailey, how are things in the land of lists and filing?’

I grin. ‘Very organised and easy to follow actually.’

Daniel smiles. ‘Well let me buy my newest staff member a much-needed coffee to reward her for her hard work so far. You probably could do with it, and I know that I could as the natives have been extremely restless this morning.’

I laugh, and he smiles at me softly. ‘That's better Sophie, that's what we need to see more of - you laughing. In fact, I am going to make it my personal mission to wipe that worried look from your face at every opportunity.’

He holds out his hand, and my heart almost stops beating, as I allow him to pull me up from my chair. As our hand's touch, I feel a shiver of desire run through me. Instantly I admonish myself. Get a grip Sophie, you're all over the place and he is only being kind!

We walk towards the staff room, and I decide to do a bit of digging and find out as much as I can about him.

‘So, tell me, Daniel do you live far?’

He smiles. ‘The other side of town. It's quite convenient and everything we need is on our doorstep.’

My heart plunges as he says we. Of course, he lives with someone. It would be against the law for him to live alone.

‘Oh, that's nice. Have you lived there long?’

He nods. ‘About a year. It was a new development and provided us with everything that we needed, no decorating to do, all mod cons, and close proximity to everything we need. The price wasn't too bad either.’

I must know more about this ‘we’ so press on.

‘You say us, how many of you live there?’

He laughs. ‘You make it sound like a squat.’

I feel embarrassed, and as we reach the staffroom door he stops with his hand on the handle and looks at me with a soft smile on his heavenly lips.

‘Sorry, that sounded a bit rude. There are only two of us. We have been friends for years and then decided to take the plunge and live together. His name is Sam and he is a pilot.’

He opens the door and all my hopes and fantasies come crashing down.

I was right, of course, he's gay. No normal man dresses like he does, and has impeccable grooming. He is also in touch with his feminine side, and the concern and friendly banter is just, even more, evidence.
